St John Bosco

St John Bosco 1815-1888 My God, fortunate is he who has tasted how sweet it is to work for the salvation of souls….. Give me souls, Lord And take all the rest. Lord help us as individuals and as the church to come back to this kind of passion for the lost. But I have this against you, you have abandoned the love you had at first. Remember then from what you have fallen, repent and do the works you did at first. —Revelation 2:4-5a St John Bosco, pray for us....

Hold on to Your Confidence

Hold on to Your Confidence

Remember the days past, when after you had been enlightened, you endured a great contest of suffering. At times you were publicly exposed to abuse or affliction; at other times you associated yourselves with those so treated.   You even joined in the sufferings of those in prison and joyfully accepted the confiscation of your property, knowing that you had a better and lasting possession. Therefore, do not throw away your confidence; it will have great recompense. You need endurance to do the will of God and receive what He has promised.   For, after just a brief moment, He who is to come, shall come; He shall not delay. But my just one shall live by faith, And if He draws back, I take no pleasure in him. —Hebrews 10:32-38   What is...

Where’s Your Peace ?

Where’s Your Peace ?

The other night we had a wicked storm roll in. It’s a part of life when you live here in the tropics, but no matter how accustomed to them you become, they can rattle your peace. I write this blog because the noise of the world can become like that storm. We’re all used to it ..it’s a part of our life, but it’s robbing so many of us of our peace. Seems like it gets darker and louder every day. You can’t ignore the storms of life any more than you can mother nature’s wild dark horses thundering in a threatening storm. We have to be realists. There’s a lot out there to make some noise about. All you have to do is spend 5 minutes on a news site. You’ll see enough to make you throw your hands up thinking hope is for...

Who Are You, Lord ?

Who Are You, Lord ?

The Conversion of St. Paul Conversions are true miracles and they don’t just happen to people who get “knocked off their horse.” In fact, Scripture doesn’t actually say Paul was on one. What he was on– was a mission to deliver those who believed in Christ to prison and death.. So righteous and zealous was his blindness that we first meet him assisting at the stoning of Stephan,  (Acts 7:59) Then they cast him out of the city and stoned him; and the witnesses laid down their garments at the feet of a young man named..Saul. Conversion happens when, by the mercy of God, the light goes on in our heart, we finally see Jesus as the source of our eternal life…and ourselves for what we really are; sinners saved by the grace of...

Pray for Our Men and Women in Law Enforcement

Pray for Our Men and Women in Law Enforcement

I normally don’t post about news stories. Others do it much better than I ever could. I’m called to stick with how the Scriptures and lives of the saints can give us hope and healing in the midst of these turbulent times we live in. But today, close to my home two police officers were killed in the line of duty this morning. Again. http://www.myfoxtampabay.com/dpp/news/ local/pinellas/reports-officers-down-st-pete-012411 January 20th two officers were killed in Miami…In June 2010 two were killed in Tampa. This is close to my heart. I come from a family of police officers. My father was one… A gold shield New York City homicide detective who gave more of himself for the safety of others than I could ever give homage to here.. two of his...

Come After Me-I Will Make You Fishers of Men

Come After Me-I Will Make You Fishers of Men

One of my favorite Bible teachers told me once if you expect me to spoon feed you everything you need to know about a Scripture you’ve come to the wrong class. She taught me to study hard, but lean on the Holy Spirit to give the understanding.  This is my hope for you every time I post or comment about a Scripture. Study the cross references, read each Scripture in context, meditate on how the Sunday readings relate to one another….What does the church teach, what does the Catechism say ?  Then ask the Holy Spirit to give you wisdom and understanding. Wait upon Him… I promise— if you ask…He will give it to you. If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives to all men generously and without reproaching, and it will be given...

St Agnes, Meet Jersey Shore

St Agnes, Meet Jersey Shore

St Agnes of Rome D. 304 Have you seen Jersey Shore?  I don’t recommend it, but sadly it is representative of the aberrant sex infested “friends with benefits” culture we live in. Innocence ? That will get you laughed off a college campus.. And probably the local middle school too. Once, mature adults would have looked at these 20 somethings on reality TV who live every drunken, sexual excess imaginable and been horrified. But no, one of the stars, Mike “The Situation,” was on Dancing With the Stars and recently, Jay Leno. When they filmed on the shore, Jersey star Snooki, was arrested for drunken disorderly conduct on the beach. DJ Pauli, another tee shirt talent, was getting $40,000 for club appearances a year ago. They’re...

The Anchor of the Soul

The Anchor of the Soul

Anchor Cross A combination of a cross and an anchor, emblematic of faith and hope. It was often used as a sacred symbol in the catacombs. —from: Saints.SQPN.com I wonder how many of those martyred saints held Hebrews 6: 18-20 pressed to their hearts as they went to their death. …we who have taken refuge might be strongly encouraged to hold fast to the hope before us. This we have as an anchor of the soul, sure and firm, which reaches into the interior behind the veil, where Jesus entered on our behalf as a forerunner… This is the hope before us; God’s promise and the oath He takes to fulfill it.. These are the two “immutable things, ” to which we may hold fast and take refuge. God alone is our anchor in the storms of our modern...

St Anthony, Abbot

St Anthony, Abbot

Saint Anthony, Abbot Tempted by a Heap of Gold One of the things I have most enjoyed as an oblate novice this year has been learning about the desert fathers. Who would imagine that a third century wandering hermit in the Egyptian desert would have something to teach us. But listen to this: Anthony is often pictured in art, surrounded by debased creatures who gather to lure him into sin by offering the devil disguised in various cloaks, such as posing as a woman or an object of wealth. —Wikipedia He embarked on his life of prayer, fasting and work when, as a young man of 18 or 20 years of age he heard the powerful word of the gospel, “If you wish to be perfect, go, sell your possessions, and give the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in...

God is Watching Over Us

God is Watching Over Us

Christ the Redeemer statue in Brazil To all of you who visit this blog, you are in my prayers. I think of you in my rosary and entrust all the struggles you may be enduring to His eternal watchful care. We all have times when we think He couldn’t possibly endure our conflict with sin one more day...but He does. Or we lose patience and perseverance in prayer because we’re sure He’s not listening….but He is. Have you thought that the tragedy of sin in the world and the church has frustrated any hope of us seeing the fulfillment of God’s loving plan? We are too quick to forget His mission. Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sins of the world. —John 1:29 Today’s opening prayer of the mass left me stunned in my pew,...
