Progress or Regress

Progress or Regress

Today is the feast of my holy father St Benedict. In the cultural climate we find ourselves, it’s appropriate to identify with St Benedict in the spirit of his mission. Disappointed in the worldliness of his surroundings, he too faced the truth of the corruption of his time and surrendered to God. In doing so he was blessed with God’s wisdom, and wrote the Holy Rule which even today gives guidance to all as they progress on their journey to God. In America today, we like Europe who after emerging from the wounds of two World Wars and the collapse of so called great ideologies, are still in search of an identity. None of us seem able to learn the lesson that history has taught us ad nauseum;  “In order to create new and lasting unity,...

The skeleton in my car

The skeleton in my car

This is a re-post which saddened me to read since my son has moved and I am no longer able to attend this parish when I visit. I’ve also been wondering how this parish is faring in the current climate of the Church where traditionalism and orthodoxy are seen as clinging to the past :   One of the blessings I have when visiting my grandson, is attending Mass at a very traditional Polish Catholic parish near my son’s house. Attending there, takes me back to a time when I remember the Mass celebrated with such reverence you left with a sense of awe, a time before it was so heavily influenced by the cool, indifferent Protestant characteristics I know so well. I spent twenty years in every kind of Protestant church community you can think of..I...

In Bits and Pieces

In Bits and Pieces

The Rule in Bits and Pieces is a new book on the Holy Rule of St Benedict where each of it’s 140 Chapters have reflections by a diverse collection of contributors from the monks and oblates of St Vincent Archabbey. There are many commentaries available on the “strict sense of the word” in the rule, but not many geared particularly toward oblates in the 21st Century. Our situations are somewhat different from our predecessors, living as we are in this “culture of death.” This work then gives the personal reflections of monks and oblates of our day and time in the hope that each reader would be led to a deeper conversion on their Christian journey. In the introduction the editor reminds us that the “rule” should not...

True Transformation

Looks like this   “Above the neckline of his black hood, his neck tattoos remain. His hands are marked with a spiderweb, women’s faces, an alpha and omega, and “HOLD FAST” on his knuckles. A red heart marks his palm. His name is Love after all.”   Brother Andre Love, may the Lord continue to bless you and give you His Peace.   +PAX

Icon Sancta

I could write about what happened to me in confession this weekend, or about the Mass that included the new Eucharistic Minister’s children hugging her legs while she distributed the precious Blood of Jesus…or about the priest who left the ambo to interact with the congregation which included all manner of distractions.. or the music minister receiving communion while he was singing, but I’d rather just not talk much anymore. I’d rather pray and leave you with Sister Irene and her beautiful Icons.     You know our culture, church and world are in a free fall. Pray, fast, submerge yourself in the sacraments and the Holy Scriptures. We must keep our eyes fixed on on the Lord so that as we are “tossed about by the...
