Deconstructionism vs the missionary mandate

When the Lord wants to put a book in my hands, He makes it very clear to me that yes, indeed this is the book for you right now. He’s done it this way for over 30 years. Some of the books that most recently have come my way would seem a bit off putting, perhaps leaning toward the negative side of the equation, but these are not ordinary times. It’s only later when I look back at the reading list do I see the trail of truth He’s trying to convey. Before the latest book came into my hands, I had for months been telling the Lord, I don’t recognize You in the way you are being represented in the Church anymore. It was more than the news making the rounds in Catholic media causing my angst. I’ll get to some of that in a minute. It’s...

The only weapon she had

The only weapon she had

Three months after Sudanese woman Miriam Ibrahim was jailed for refusing to renounce her Christian faith, here is her first television interview. “Ibrahim was locked up in prison for four months, facing a sentence of death by hanging for the crime of marrying a Christian man. My Lord and my God

My Lord and my God

The apostle Thomas is a kindred spirit–a great saint for our confused times; for he is a curious combination of faith and doubt. Like him, I share times when I am enthused about what the Lord is doing on this journey of faith and joyfully exclaim ~   “Let us also go, that we may die with Him.” —John 11:16   But full disclosure forces me to admit that like Thomas, there are times, I wonder where Jesus is taking me ~   “Lord, we do not know where You are going, how can we know the way? “ —John 14:5   Such vacillation I think, is inherent to the human condition. We just want to see, know, understand and then we’d have no problem following, or at least we could make what the world terms an...

The test, the prayer, the consolation

The test, the prayer, the consolation

Today’s saint, St Philip Neri, writes He who continues in anger, strife and bitter spirit has a taste of hell. He prefaces that by saying that spirituality often begins in fervor, but then comes the day when the Lord appears to be going further with us, but withdraws His Hand. And it’s in this withdrawing that He looks to see if ‘we are strong, if we’ll stand firm,’ if we can ~ resist and overcome those tribulations and temptations. It’s easy, he says to form a fervent, quick  devotion, but it’s perseverance– especially when any consolations from the sweetness of His Hand are gone–that counts. That’s when we have to make the choice between the air of hell or applying ourselves to an increase in...
