SAINT GABRIEL—ARCHANGEL   Feast: March 24   The Jews venerated Gabriel as the angel of judgment, and in both Jewish and Christian tradition he is one of the seven archangels. Gabriel is also known to the Mohammedans, who believe him to be the angel who served as the mouthpiece of God in dictating the Koran to their prophet.   Mention of St. Gabriel occurs four times in the Scriptures. He first appears to Daniel in the guise of a man and proceeds to interpret a vision Daniel has had of a ram with two horns, which is overcome by a he-goat. Gabriel explains that the ram is the empire of the Medes and the Persians which will be destroyed by the he-goat, the king of the Greeks (Alexander the Great). This vision came to Daniel in the year 554 B.C.,...

Always have an answer ready…

Always have an answer ready…

Besides my normal visitation, I have been a regular at the hospital since last Friday, when I had to take my aunt in through the emergency room. If ever there were a place that needs to know the love of God is real…that– for sure–is the place. No matter how many times I’m there, it’s hard not to get swallowed up in the tornadic activity of every available medical person coming to the aid of the sick and injured. It’s very easy to lose that prayerful focus. And it occurred to me as we waited, why it’s important to daily be in the Word of God.. You never know when He’ll call on you to give an answer for the hope in you, right in the middle of the whirlwind.   Simply proclaim the Lord, Christ holy in your...

There’s No Secret Code

There’s No Secret Code

The longer I submerge my life into Holy Mother Church, the more I recognize her profound beauty, the more I love her and long for others to know the wisdom of the full deposit of our faith as Catholics. ...preach the word, be urgent in season and out of season, convince, rebuke, and exhort, be unfailing in patience and in teaching. —2 Timothy 4:2 Lately, this word ‘urgent’ stands out to me, as well as the call to unfailing patience, because now is ‘the time to speak.’ The complications we see evident among our own neighbors are like a labyrinth from which people are seeking a way out, a treasure map containing some secret code. There is no secret code, but there is a seduction being offered today which tempts many to set aside...

Truth is the Trumpet of Liberty

Truth is the Trumpet of Liberty

In a church I attended this week, the sermon was a bit…off. Maybe the pastor was having a bad day– I don’t know. But, when you begin to teach on the gospel with words of warning, that perhaps what Jesus is saying is not at all what He’s REALLY saying because the language has gone from Aramaic to Greek to English and were that Scripture to be substituted into the words of the Eucharistic prayer, well you’d see right off that they clash with what we know of our Savior’s call for …peace.   Here’s the gospel reading I’m referring to:   Jesus said to his disciples: “I have come to set the earth on fire, and how I wish it were already blazing! There is a baptism with which I must be baptized, and...

It’s All in My Head

The biggest spiritual battle is fought ….between the ears.   “The life of the Christian has three distinguishing aspects: deeds words thoughts Thought comes first then words, since our words express openly the interior conclusions of the mind. Finally, after thoughts and words, comes action for the deeds carry out what the mind has conceived.”   In order to wage the battle successfully, we must make sure; “…that all our thoughts, words and deeds are controlled by the divine ideal… the revelation of  Christ.” When I find myself slipping into a black vortex of fears–whatever they may be–I renew my mind with the contrary promise of God from His Word. Though I may be hanging by a thread battling my...
