…Not permitting them to speak

…Not permitting them to speak

When it was evening, after sunset,

they brought to him all who were ill or possessed by demons.

The whole town was gathered at the door.

He cured many who were sick with various diseases,

and he drove out many demons,

not permitting them to speak because they knew him.

—–¬†from the Gospel reading, fifth Sunday, Ordinary Time

“The devils knew that Jesus was the Christ who had been promised by the Law, for they saw in Him all the signs which had been foretold by the prophets. But they were ignorant of His divinity.”

“The reason why Jesus forbade the devils to speak was to teach us not to believe them, even if they say truth. For if once they find persons to believe them, they mingle truth with falsehood.”
