He Comes to Conquer the Devil

He Comes to Conquer the Devil

The Slaughter of the Children of Bethlehem by Gustave Doré     Why are you afraid, Herod, when you hear of the birth of a king? He does not come to drive you out, but to conquer the devil But because you do not understand this you are disturbed and in a rage, and to destroy one child whom you seek, you show your cruelty in the death of so many children. —Quodvultdeus: Sermon  LOH     Herod couldn’t fight the battle of fear within himself, so he found the easiest target– to slay from without what he could not conquer within. Here in the midst of this season of joy we’re reminded of the injustice being done to the unborn today. Abortion, the slaughter of innocents…the rage and cruelty being fought from...

The Korean Martyrs

The Korean Martyrs

Korean Martyrs, Sts. Andrew, Paul and companions This is one of the greatest missionary stories of all time, because the faith was planted not by foreign missionaires, but as the result of one layman. From the Roman Missal: From the very beginning these Christian suffered terrible persecutions that over the course of the 19th century gave the church many martyrs. Outstanding among these were the first Korean priest and devoted pastor Andrew Kim of Taegu, and the lay apostle, Paul Chong of Hasang. Among the Korean martyrs who struggled valiantly for Christ were bishops and priests, but for the most part they were laity, men and women, married and single, young and old. ————- The 103 Korean Martyrs were canonized in 1984 by Pope John Paul...

St Justin Martyr, Defender of the Faith

St Justin Martyr, Defender of the Faith

Pagan philosopher who converted at age 30 by reading the Scriptures and witnessing the heroism and faith of martyrs. Used his philosophical and oratorical skills to dispute with pagans and explain the faith, becoming one of the first great Christian apologists. He opened a school of public debate in Rome, Italy. All this naturally brought him to the attention of the authorities, and he died a martyr. I wouldn’t be surprised if we as Christians, will one day have to stand before a civil or legal authority to give a defense of our faith. We’re on a slippery slope as a nation when it comes to acknowledging God’s truth. Justin’s aggressive Christianity made him many enemies which brought him to the attention of the courts of his day. He...

Theater of Fire and Blood

Theater of Fire and Blood

The Martyrdom of St Polycarp, Bishop of Smyrna (155 or 166) Imagine having personal contact with the twelve apostles and probably being appointed Bishop of Smyrna by St John. Polycarp was a revered elder statesmen of the church in the East, who for more than half a century devoted himself to teaching sound doctrine and opposing heresy; a job that seems very popular with the early church fathers. There was a heretic named Marcion who Polycarp snubbed once on a visit to Rome, Don’t you know who I am, Polycarp? he asked. Oh yes, said the saint, I know the firstborn of Satan when I see him. This is the kind of boldness that we in the 21st century redefine as …’so’ insensitive and judgmental. In his time, the Roman persecutions of Diocletian...

St Agnes, Meet Jersey Shore

St Agnes, Meet Jersey Shore

St Agnes of Rome D. 304 Have you seen Jersey Shore?  I don’t recommend it, but sadly it is representative of the aberrant sex infested “friends with benefits” culture we live in. Innocence ? That will get you laughed off a college campus.. And probably the local middle school too. Once, mature adults would have looked at these 20 somethings on reality TV who live every drunken, sexual excess imaginable and been horrified. But no, one of the stars, Mike “The Situation,” was on Dancing With the Stars and recently, Jay Leno. When they filmed on the shore, Jersey star Snooki, was arrested for drunken disorderly conduct on the beach. DJ Pauli, another tee shirt talent, was getting $40,000 for club appearances a year ago. They’re...
